Breast health services we offer
We offer multiple types of breast imaging, so we can make sure you receive the specialized care you need.
Breast cancer screening
Most women are able to have clear imaging results with a screening mammogram. However, some women with dense breast tissue or certain risk factors may require additional forms of screening.
No matter what type of imaging you need, we are here for you at our dedicated Breast Care Center. Here, our screening options include:
- 2D screening mammogram
- 3D mammogram
- Computer-aided detection (CAD)
- Breast ultrasound, including handheld and automated techniques
A breast ultrasound may be used in combination with a mammogram when an abnormality is identified. Our radiologists also use CAD to analyze imaging results for suspicious areas.
If you are referred for breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, your imaging exam will take place at our main hospital.

3D mammograms
A 3D mammogram is one of the latest innovations in breast imaging and is more effective in screening for breast cancer. This imaging exam allows the radiologist to view the layers of breast tissue via an image-slicing technique, making it easier for doctors to identify abnormalities because they don't have to look through overlapping tissues. Because of this, 3D mammography has become especially useful as a screening tool for women with dense breast tissue.
Breast biopsy procedures
If an abnormality, such as calcifications or a lump, is found on an imaging exam, you will be referred for further testing to confirm or deny a breast cancer diagnosis. This is most often done through conducting a biopsy, which is a procedure to remove a sample of breast tissue for analysis.
Our breast specialists perform stereotactic breast biopsies and ultrasound-guided breast biopsies at the Breast Care Center.
Breast cancer care
If you receive a breast cancer diagnosis, our breast cancer nurse navigator is here to help you understand your treatment options. These team members support you and your family throughout your cancer care journey at our hospital.
Treatment will depend on the type and stage of your breast cancer. Our hospital offers treatment, including:
- Advanced hormone therapy
- Lumpectomy
- Mastectomy
- Radiation therapy
Our surgeons also perform breast reconstructive surgery to help rebuild a natural-looking breast mound after surgical treatment.
Preparing for a mammogram
Learn more about how to prepare for your mammogram and how to obtain images from your scan.
Preparing for a mammogram
Typically, a referral for a mammogram is required. Mammograms can be slightly uncomfortable, but we do our best to make you feel at ease and move quickly through the process.
For a more comfortable mammogram experience, we also suggest following these guidelines:
- Do not wear lotion, powder or deodorant
- If your breasts are normally tender, take an over-the-counter pain reliever 30 minutes prior to your exam
- Schedule your mammogram for seven to 10 days after your menstrual cycle, this is when breasts are less tender
- Wear a two-piece outfit
Mammograms for women with breast implants
Women with breast implants are able to receive a mammogram. Implants may make visualization more difficult, so we use special techniques to ensure we obtain a clear view.
Mammogram results
The wait time for mammogram results varies based on the type of mammogram performed. If you have received a screening mammogram, results can be expected five to seven business days after your exam. If you have undergone a diagnostic mammogram, you are usually given results on the same day as the imaging procedure.
Breast imaging release form
If you would like to share your breast imaging films and reports with another healthcare provider, please fill out our breast imaging release form. By completing the form, you authorize the release of imaging exams completed at the Breast Care Center to another healthcare provider. Once it is complete, please fax the form to (408) 358-8485.
