Support for NICU families
We offer many avenues of support for families with newborns in our NICU.
Parental resources
Our hospital offers a dedicated parent education room in which you are able to research more about your newborn's condition through electronic content and our traditional library. You may also check out a tablet from the resource room to use at your child's bedside so you can continue learning about their condition.
Additionally, you have access to our parent lounge. The lounge offers a quiet place where you can relax and grab a snack. It also includes a private pumping room and an overnight room, where parents of newborns with complex needs can practice caring for their child prior to discharge.
Our social workers host monthly parent "coffee times" with a former NICU parent to provide peer support for families. Additionally, we host car seat inspection events every month to help prepare you for discharge.
Family resources
The Auxiliary of Good Samaritan Hospital, a non-profit organization, developed A Caring Community of Education (ACCESS) to help families spend more time with their babies in the NICU. This program can help you develop the skills you will need when your child comes home.
The ACCESS mission is to support families of critically ill newborns by providing free services, such as home stays, transportation assistance, food, child-care assistance and educational resources. By providing these services, your family has more time to focus on bonding and learning to care for their infants.
To learn more about this program, please call our ACCESS Service Chair at (408) 559-2395 or visit our website.
ACCESS stories
This program helps families who have a child in our NICU. We have helped families by:
- Paying for CPR glasses for parents who could not afford a CPR certification course
- Providing a host home for parents and their newborn who had been released from the NICU but still needed treatments that required frequent long-distance travel
- Providing daily round-trip rides to the NICU when they did not have transportation to and from the hospital
- Providing gas vouchers and food for when they had a long commute to the NICU and could not afford gas or food
- Purchasing a car bed when they could not afford one for their newborn who needed prior surgical treatment for a spine condition
Help ACCESS support NICU families
The ACCESS program is funded strictly on a donation basis. Donors can help support our families by providing:
- $150 for CPR training for a mother and father or a car bed for their baby
- $250 for two nights at a local hotel
- $500 for food provided in the family room for one month
- $7,200 for gas vouchers for one year for all our NICU families
All contributions to ACCESS are tax deductible and may be mailed to:
