Weight loss surgery

Weight loss surgery, also known as bariatric surgery, is performed on patients with obesity. There are several types of bariatric procedures, but all focus on making modifications to the digestive system with the goal of significant weight loss.

Bariatric surgery services we offer

We offer bariatric surgery, also known as weight loss surgery, and many other support services to help you during your health journey.

Our accredited weight loss program

We are proud to be an Accredited Bariatric Surgery Center recognized by The American College of Surgeons Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP). In addition, our bariatric surgeons are members of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), and our nurses are specially certified in bariatric surgery.

Bariatric surgery can reduce the risk of weight-related health problems like:

  • Heart disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Severe sleep apnea
  • Type 2 diabetes

Our program provides you with:

  • Extensive educational resources for surgery preparation and recovery
  • Preoperative information calls
  • Private rooms
  • Weight loss support groups

Candidates for bariatric surgery

According to the ASMBS, to qualify for bariatric surgery you must have:

  • A body mass index (BMI) of 40 or greater or be more than 100 pounds overweight
  • A BMI of 35 to 40 with significant weight-related health problems
  • Tried other medically managed weight loss programs without success

Before bariatric surgery, it's also important that you are prepared to follow the lifelong post-care and lifestyle changes that these procedures demand.

Types of bariatric surgery we offer

Once we have determined that you qualify for bariatric surgery, we will work with you to decide which type of procedure is best. After surgery, you can expect to be in the hospital for one to two days. You should be able to return to normal activities within two to three weeks, as long as there are no major complications.

Gastric bypass

During gastric bypass surgery, your surgeon will staple a portion of your stomach to create a small pouch. The new stomach pouch is connected to the small intestine, which allows food to bypass the remainder of the stomach and upper portion of the small intestine.

Gastric sleeve

The gastric sleeve procedure, also called vertical sleeve gastrectomy, is the most frequently performed weight loss surgery at our hospital. This is a minimally invasive, laparoscopic procedure that divides the stomach lengthwise, which greatly reduces the stomach's food capacity.

This procedure decreases the amount of food that can be consumed. It also suppresses hunger by decreasing ghrelin, the hormone responsible for hunger.

Bariatric support resources

We know how important it is to get support before and after bariatric surgery. We offer many different support group options to meet your individual needs.

Weight loss surgery support groups

Our hospital hosts support groups for you if you have undergone bariatric surgery or are considering your weight loss options. The groups are led by bariatric specialists and give you an opportunity to ask questions and support others on their weight loss journey.

Additional support resources

Bariatric Support Centers International (BSCI) offers bariatric support groups on a weekly basis. This group provides education and support for individuals interested in bariatric surgery or people who are assessing their weight loss options. Bilingual options are also available. Learn more about BSCI's telephonic support group.

Support groups at other locations across the U.S. can be found at Obesity Help.
