Santa Clara County’s First Pulmonary Rehabilitation Center

The pulmonary rehabilitation program at Good Samaritan Hospital helps patients learn about proper breathing techniques, effective use of medication, pulmonary relaxation and strengthening exercises and early recognition of respiratory infection. Our effectiveness is demonstrated by an 80 percent reduction in the rate of patient rehospitalizations in our program.

It is vital that patients with lung ailments be enrolled in a pulmonary rehab program as early in their illness as possible. Early detection and treatment of pulmonary problems can lead to better outcomes and improved quality of life for patients by reducing the negative impact that comes with the advanced stages of pulmonary disease.

A team approach
The team includes physical therapist and occupational therapist. This team approach allows us to tailor the classes to meet the individual needs that may vary from group to group.

We teach about breathing techniques, exercise, energy conservation, oxygen use, diet and medications.

Occupational therapists focus on teaching how to most efficiently move your body while performing daily tasks to best conserve energy and get the job done. Physical therapists can help you get the most out of reconditioning muscles in the shortest possible time.

Phase I
Phase I is a general overall pulmonary assessment.

Phase II
Phase II pulmonary rehabilitation is an eight-week program. Patients attend two, two-hour sessions each week for eight weeks to improve pulmonary function and build stamina safely and effectively. During rehabilitation, patients exercise at the appropriate level and receive a customized home exercise plan, along with the proper education needed to best manage their disease.

Phase III
Phase III consists of a pulmonary maintenance plan and includes two weekly exercise classes. This phase is designed to help patients maintain and improve the overall exercise and functional levels achieved through the pulmonary wellness program in Phase II.
