Imagine cancer surgery with no scalpel, no anesthesia—not even a
surgeon. Imagine "inoperable tumors" in the depths of the brain
or the complexity of the spine treated without a single incision.
What was once an imagined world of the future is a reality today as Good
Samaritan Hospital brings CyberKnife® robotic radiosurgery to San Jose.
CyberKnife is a non-invasive alternative to surgery for the treatment of
both cancerous and non-cancerous tumors anywhere in the body, including
the head, spine, lung, prostate, liver, and pancreas.
Good Sam’s CyberKnife center offers non-surgical treatment options
that are pain-free outpatient procedures with reduced treatment time and
immediate return to normal activity.
The CyberKnife system uses image guidance software to track and continually
adjust treatment for any patient or tumor movement. Some forms of radiosurgery
require rigid head-frames screwed into the patient’s skull to minimize
any movement. CyberKnife does not. With tracking by the guidance software,
some patients even fall asleep during their treatments.
While some other radiosurgery systems can treat tumors only in the head,
the CyberKnife system has almost unlimited reach throughout the body.
With pin-point accuracy, the system targets delivery of radiation to the
tumor alone, sparing surrounding healthy tissue.
Before treatment, a high resolution CT scan determines the size, shape,
and location of the tumor. The image data is transferred to the CyberKnife
workstation where physicians and physicists calculate a specific treatment plan.
This plan matches the desired radiation dose to the tumor location, limiting
radiation exposure of the surrounding healthy tissue.
Once the patient is comfortably positioned on a treatment table, the CyberKnife’s
computer-controlled robot will slowly move around the patient to various
locations from which it delivers radiation to the tumor.
Each treatment lasts between 30 and 90 minutes. If treatment is planned
in stages, a patient will need to return for additional treatments over
several days, usually no more than five.
While comfort and convenience are a plus for patients, the most important
attributes of the CyberKnife system are its accuracy and effectiveness
in offering the most advanced and widest ranges of treatment options close
to where patients live and work.
CyberKnife will join a multitude of surgical and non-surgical options for
patients from San Jose and the region, increasing access to the latest
treatment modalities without extensive travel or extended treatment times.
